What is the cost of paralegal training?

Before making a decision to become a paralegal, prospective student need to understand what is the cost of a degree or certificate.

The amount you will need to spend usually depends on the following criteria (most important are on top):

  • Type of degree you want (whether it’s a certificate, associate’s or even more advanced degree)
  • Type of program (online or in-campus)
  • The school

Type of degree

Usually, to start working as a paralegal you will a certificate or associate's degree (the latter is better, of course, but is also more expensive). You can also start a bachelor's program. Many people choose this option trying to get better employment opportunities after graduation. So here's an approximate cost of each of these options:

Certificate

Associate's

Bachelor's

Online

$2,200

$23,000

$48,000

In-campus**

$6,400

$34,000

$61,000

* the estimates given are given for degree. E.g., Associate's degree usually take 2 years to get. More about how long it takes to get a specific degree, read here.

** estimates for in-campus degrees are given for in-state residents. Prices may very based on whether you're considered a local resident or not.

*** numbers given above are only for reference. You should get exact tuition fees from the schools you contact. We suggest to request information from several schools in order to have data for comparison and choose the best option.

Type of program

As you can see above, online programs are considerably cheaper when compared to their in-campus analogues. The reason's for that are clear - schools save lot of money by providing distance learning. And this reflects directly on tuition cost.

Online

Great option for those working part- or even full-time. Reasonable tuition fees.

We like:

  • Study at your own pace, wherever you are
  • Reasonable cost
  • Flexible schedule

We don't like:

  • Works only for self-organized individuals

In-campus

If you have some extra time and money, choose this one.

We like:

  • Study at your own pace, wherever you are
  • Reasonable cost
  • Flexible schedule

We don't like:

  • Works only for self-organized individuals

School & Location

We haven't seen much difference on tuition cost that depend on a part of country you will get your degree. What matters more are specific schools. There are more popular schools, where education cost can be 20-30% more for the same degree (with very minor difference in curriculum) when compared to a less popular school. That's why, again, we advice to contact as many schools, as possible to make the right choice from later.
